Growing sundews from seed is a vey rewarding but a slow process, tropical and subtropical sundew plants such as the Drosera can take around 1-8 weeks to germinate depending on growing conditions while more difficult sundew plants such as the tuberous Drosera can take up to 3 years. Don’t feel disheartened if your sundew seeds take a little longer to germinate at sundew plants.co.uk we keep all our planted seeds for at least two years.
Growing sundews is rather straight forward and reach maturity at a faster rate than most other carnivorous plants such as the Venus fly trap and pitcher plants. All our cape sundew seeds and drosera seeds that we sell are first stored in a temperate controlled environment to mimic the winter conditions so are ready to plant under under artificial lights indoors or a sunny windowsill.

How to plant sundew seeds

After buying your sundew seeds but before unpacking them you will want to setup your sowing pots, to do so you will need sphangum moss and a small 2-inch pot or 4-inch pot. We recommend the use of sphagnum moss when growing drosera sundew seeds as its moist and holds less nutrients than peat, which helps reduce algae and mold breakouts, you can also use rinsed peat:sand mixes or plant directly into premade carnvious plant soil.
You will want the pots to be in a room around 22c for healthy germination you can also use a germination heat mat to boost seedings should the room not be at the required temperature. please watch out for algae growth in the containers, if found clean the container with boiling water and then refill with rain or distilled water. The algae is harmless if removed early on but can cause issues later if not removed.

Once you have everything prepared

Start by rinising the medium whether this is pure sphagnum moss or part mixed peat/sand this will help prevent mold and algae growth. Its now time to sow the seeds to do this sprinkle them onto the surface of the medium, try to evenly spread the seeds around the pot surface, you dont want them to close or too far apart. The seeds should end up evenly spread and remain on the surface, do not burry the seeds or nothing will grow. Once the seeds are on top place the pot into a water tray filled with carnivorous plant water, distilled or rain water and cover the chamber to provide a humidity enclosure to help with growth.
