Like most carnivorous plants, Venus Flytraps need specific soil. Using regular potting or garden
soil is likely to kill the plant.

To ensure success, you’ll want to purchase a soil mix specific to carnivorous plants. Additionally,
you could also do a 2:1 mixture of sphagnum peat moss and horticultural sand instead. Some
gardeners choose to use perlite rather than sand.

It is critical that you keep the soil of a venus flytrap moist. You don’t want to waterlog your plant,
but neither do you want it ever to dry out. However, you mustn’t use tap water for your
carnivorous plants. They are very sensitive to the minerals and additives common in tap water;
instead, you will want to use distilled water, collected rainwater, or water from a reverse-osmosis
system.

By using the proper water and soil for your Venus flytrap, you’ll have done two of the most
important things for keeping it alive and thriving
